When we needed to obtain RYA certificates for the Captains and Mates of the Sail Training Association's schooners I chose John Goode's Southern Sailing. It was the right choice. His school is the one I still recommend to people today because I know they come back from their training full of confidence and with a greater awareness of seamanship, which is what really matters.

Our examiner arrived that evening, and all fears of being examined by someone I could not identify with were completely blown away! John Goode was a great character, with his old reefer jacket and smoking his favourite pipe he was incredibly sharp and had an acute sense of humour, and I warmed to him immediately. He is a doer, not a pretender. You will never meet anyone who calls a spade a spade to a greater extent than John.

I stood in the London Boat Show confronted by what had to be the most sophisticated grown-up woman going on an RYA practical cruising course this year. She happened to be French. "Ah, you know, Thomas, good instruction isn't about flashy stuff. It's about people. And seamanship. I did a course with John Goode's Southern Sailing and I've just signed on for another." She swept out of my life on a wave of Rive Gauche, but I knew she'd got it right. When all the tinsel has been blown away by the gale, John's men and women are still standing fast. Real values in the real world of the sea, which never changes.

No matter how well equipped our boat is with the latest high tech navigation aids, it's an understanding of the ways of the sea and our fragile existence upon it that ultimately keeps us safe in a storm or when approaching an unfamiliar shore in falling visibility.

I know from my own pleasant experience at Southern this essential understanding is fully reflected in John Goode's refreshing approach to teaching the fundamentals of seamanship and navigation. When the chips are down it's only the basics that old mother sea respects.

In a world of microchip must-haves, Southern Sailing stands out from the crowd by teaching real sea-going values in real sea-going boats. Rod and I were lucky enough to pick John's school more than 20 years ago when we each began our own RYA training and it has stood us in good stead ever since. If we could send all of our RYA distance learning students to him for their practical training we would sleep easy in our bunks."
